Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares announced this Friday the immediate dispatch of humanitarian aid to Gaza, alongside two financial contributions totaling 16.5 million euros. These funds are allocated to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) and Spanish non-governmental organizations (NGOs) operating in the region.

Speaking at a joint press conference with his French counterpart, Jean-Noël Barrot, following a working lunch in Paris, Albares detailed that 13.5 million euros will go to the UNRWA, while 3 million euros will support Spanish NGOs in Gaza.

Albares emphasized the urgent need for aid following the ceasefire in Gaza, stating:
“Once the ceasefire is achieved, efforts must focus on the release of all hostages and the massive entry of humanitarian aid.”

He underscored the gravity of the situation in Gaza, warning of the likelihood of uncovering a “catastrophe” in the aftermath.

Beyond immediate relief, Albares highlighted the necessity of working toward making the ceasefire permanent. He reiterated that the ultimate solution lies in the establishment of “a Palestinian state that can coexist peacefully with Israel.”

Last week, following the announcement of the ceasefire, Albares revealed that Spain had prepared a humanitarian aid package worth 24 million euros, with the possibility of increasing it to 50 million euros swiftly if needed.

This announcement reflects Spain’s commitment to addressing the urgent humanitarian crisis in Gaza while advocating for a long-term solution to the conflict.
